In the fall of 2005, I traveled to Glastonbury, England, the holy Isle of Avalon. It was here more than anywhere else in the world I found a special kind of peace and sense of home, touching ground, drinking in the green magic like a thirsty faerie.
My second day in Glastonbury, a woman commissioned me to paint the Magdalene energy at the Chalice Well. Honor is the word to express how I felt; I could not have imagined a more gracious welcoming by the Goddess.
Mary Magdalene is a medicine woman in my perception through my experience of painting her. The dictionary recognizes that medicine is a synonym for magic, as applied to magical forms of healing. The Medicine Woman is not necessarily only a healer, although healing is one of her duties. The Native Americans have long applied the word medicine to any mysterious force, which is beyond our understanding. The Medicine Woman is one who possessed supernatural powers as prophet, seer, priestess, physician, or spiritual healer. She might be any one of these or all combined. Primarily she is a holy woman, one who can speak with the spirits and know the ways of the Great Spirit. She has the ability to commune with all spirits dwelling on all levels of Creation.
Mary Magdalene’s essence came through stronger than any presence I had called forth at that time. Glowing already in the Holy waters I used from the Chalice Well, from the start, even before I laid any paint on the canvas, Her Spirit was visible to me. Yeshua, the beloved Christ, her lover on her masculine side, was consistently present in the most beautiful and extraordinary way, I feel I witnessed their love, strong lessons in compassion and extraordinary passion.
Magdalene holds the Vesica Pieces within the Chalice Well symbol as a medicine shield woven with the fur of the White Buffalo laced with sacred essences toned in the holy waters from the well. Sprigs and bark from the Yew tree at the well and two of the last rose pedals before the frost, collected on one of my visits, all blesses her essence on the canvas along with frankincense and myrrh. The white owl offers blessings in wisdom and protection, the white dolphin symbolizes the innocent energies play within the Christ consciousness. Her soft gentle nature is reflective of the compassionate Mother. The peacock as her crown is a symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The peacock also represents wisdom and vision. The eclectic symbology suggests travel and studies from afar. I sense the symbolic representation of us, as the human race, coming full circle and experiencing transformation for all that has been.
As I approached upon the completion of painting the Magdalene, another commission hired me to paint Yeshua, the Tanzanite Christ. In keeping with the spirit of their love, and recognizing the perfection in another gift of honor, there are no coincidences; I painted them side by side.
